Matters arising from last meeting

Job descriptions

We need to come up with a contract for A grade league, based on the social grade league. Dave, Martin to come up with contract for next meeting.

Clarify role of website coordinator vs secretary; also role of website coordinator in tracking league scores.

Hat tournament

Adrian to organize 1-day hat tournament on either Saturday March 25 or Saturday April 1. Exec likes March 25 most.

Ultimate in the news

Adrian not here to report. Beth Hine writing an article for a news outlet? (unconfirmed)

[update 2005-12-17: The Dominion Post had a small writeup + photos of the Wellington tour event on Tue 13]

A grade uniforms

Martin still hasn't received any more quotes. He requested quotes from 8 companies; 2 have replied, 2 have promised to reply, 1 has referred the request to another company, and 3 haven't replied at all.

Banner

Recap: Martin is keen to get a banner made (refer last meeting's minutes).

Martin has invoices from other banners he has had made as part of his events business. Average price $420 inc GST. Martin thinks we should get a banner about 1/4 the size of these, matching the height of the WCC fences and long enough to be in proportion. Martin estimates $100 for artwork → est $300 all up.

Martin proposes slogan: "Flying disc — the ultimate sport"

John proposes slogan: "ULTIMATE.org.nz" — relevant in other centres, maybe ask NZU to help fund.

Dave to produce some sample designs, pass them around the exec via the mailing list.

Beach tournaments

Martin has organized two beach days: Sunday 15 Paraparaumu and Monday 23 Oriental Bay. Martin thinks we need experienced people to coach and/or look after general public. Martin to email to ask for experienced players. Martin to work with Shane, Adrian, Leanne (?) on figuring out what is needed, how to run things, particularly at Paraparaumu.

Jonathan Aumonier-Ward's email

Leanne has relayed our reply to Jonathan.

Letter of complaint to NZU

Leanne has written, sent letter. Exec has received an apologetic reply from Gary Jarvis.

Exec proposes a response — the president of each regional body (WDS, ADS, Chch, PN, ?) sits on the NZU board so the regions can be more directly involved. A roles & responsibilities sheet should be drawn up for NZU / each NZU position with tasks, timeframes, etc.

Newsletter

Leanne, Brett apologise for not having prepared a newsletter. Leanne, Brett to produce newsletter before Christmas.

Discs

Dave has purchased the discs and will get a cheque from Steve.

League nights

Dave has emailed captains. Changes working well. John still to update website with MVPs.

Business / Correspondence

News media

Leanne put out a press release before the tournament. Dom post sent a photographer and (apparently) got a photo of Si Fog laying out.

Adrian to investigate getting copies of all (good) photos.

[update 2005-12-17: If such a photo ever existed, it didn't make the paper. See comment above.]

Next Thursday league

Dave proposes switching A grade to men's/women's. Reasons:

  • Starting February, the tour will be men's/women's.
  • Dave worries about retaining players, doesn't feel A grade mixed was as successful as it could have been, and so we need to change something to attract/retain people. Particularly, he wants women's ultimate to encourage more women to play.

Hilary points out — women's grade would need to be more social to attract enough people. So, what do women do if they want good quality competition?

We don't want to change social league — social league is working really well.

For summer, Exec proposes — 8 weeks of draft mixed (new draft), followed by 6 weeks of draft men's/women's.

Dave to email John with details for online signup sheet.

Tour event

Exec thanks Adele for her hard work. Exec to buy a book of ten Readings tickets for Adele as thanks, and give her a new disc too, once our new ones arrive. And a balloon. If Adele goes to the cinema with Brett, Brett is to buy his own ticket.

Next meeting

Monday 16 January, 6.15pm, Steve's house.
