Matters arising from last meeting
Exec votes to accept the minutes from last week.
- Buying more discs
Dave has produced a design. Exec agrees to buy 300 discs. Dave to pay and get reimbursed by Steve. Buy for about NZ$9/disc, not including GST, customs.
- Regional development tournament
-
Tournament was great; thanks to Jacob. Unfortunately, not many social players showed up. How do we get more? Do some research for next year; maybe an Indoorpendence Day-style tournament for next year?
Exec bemoans the dearth of mixed hat tournaments in the new NZ ultimate landscape.
Proposal: 1-day hat tournament in Wgtn, near the end of the summer, aimed at social players. Adrian to investigate dates, etc.
- NZU affiliation details
NZU affiliation details to John — people here to give John their details after the meeting.
- A grade MVP
We are collecting MVPs. Next step: Tell the MVPs on the night, publish on the website. Dave to contact captains with new instructions.
- A grade uniforms
Some quotes have come back; still waiting for most of them.
- Newsletter
Leanne to help Brett with newsletter. Photos from Nelson, MVPs from A grade, etc. Shoes article from Steve's friend. List of library contents. Any other inspiring stories, get to Leanne by next Friday.
- Media
Good work Martin on getting an article in the paper.
Adrian still following up on getting ultimate into regular sports listing.
- Accounts update
Steve has made progress on this; he is still having trouble with a few of the deposits. Steve to liase with Martin and have it finished by next meeting.
Business/Correspondence
- Job descriptions
Leanne has produced a list of job descriptions for exec members. Any corrections, email to Leanne.
- A grade time limit
Dave is concerned about games running late; he thinks it is unfair on players if games run late.
Dave to be in charge of enforcing beginning and end of games; teams not ready on time lose 2 points/5 minutes late; 4 points/10 minutes late.
- Artemis
Jonathan Aumonier-Ward is concerned that Artemis is absorbing too many women; makes it hard to put together other teams. Jonathan proposes breaking up Artemis, or running social as open/womens.
Exec thinks open/womens won't work in social (not enough women; many women who do play want to play with their friends and wouldn't play in a team with strangers; same goes for many men). Exec also thinks breaking up Artemis wouldn't release any women into the player pool because people play for their own reasons, not just as interchangable parts.
Exec thinks a women's tournament would be a fun thing to run some time. Martin proposes quarterly open/women's tournaments; say, at the end of each league in the gaps between leagues.
- Tour dates
Still want to know when the other tour events will be. Trying to get in touch with Ian; not much luck. Not impressed with the other regions.
Leanne to write letter of complaint to NZU: Our requests for the future: Tour dates for the upcoming summer must be confirmed minimum 3 months before the first event.
Dave to talk to Gary; see if he knows anything.
- Happy stuff
Leanne wants a review of good achievements of the year.
- Almost got new discs. Neato design.
- Development tournament went really well.
- Schools tournament, development went really well.
- We've spent more money than we did last year.
- DVD library has been established.
- High level of exec commitment.
- A grade draft working really well.
- League management structure good.
- Newsletter started.
- A grade Hall of Fame.
- Goaltimate kit.
- Successful ultimate party.
Add to happy things every month.
- Wgtn tour event
WDS is backing the tour; if it loses money, we will help out.
- Discs
Next meeting — talk about bulk prices for discs.
- Banner
Martin suggests getting a banner made. Steve thinks bad idea; Dave thinks it won't get used. Could add it to the league coordinator's job description to ensure it gets used.
Martin to produce design, quote, formal proposal.
- League stuff
Martin is concerned that captains don't know enough about the rules of the game, their responsibilities, etc. Suggestion: expand scoresheets, add to each scoresheet an announcement and a daily rule.
A grade draft — people pay individually in future, rather than asking the captains to organise payment.
Other issues — add a team manager as well as a team captain.
Talk about this more next meeting.
- Wgtn anniversary
Afternoon of disc on Oriental Parade beach. Council is not entirely keen, but WDS is keen to do this. Exec votes to back the idea, run the event.
Add notice to newsletter.
- Paraparaumu
Sun 15 January — Sport Kapiti running a beach day in Paraparam with touch and ultimate. Awesome. Run as a proper tournament; tutoring for families, etc. Due to tides, will be an afternoon/evening tournament. WDS will back this.
Shane, Adrian, Leanne to help out with organisation. Anyone else interested in helping out in organising, talk to Martin.
Add notice to newsletter.
- Indoorpendence Day
Martin has booked Porirua for Saturday 1 July next year.
- Organising events
Exec wonders if people like Martin should be paid for all the time they put into organising ultimate-related events. Talk about this next meeting. Also, what happens if Martin leaves?
- Speed equipment
John wants to WDS to buy some speed gear. Exec wonders about the wider benefits. John to survey Wellington community to find out interest in attending sessions. One option — Exec suggests John buy the equipment with exec money and pay the exec back over time by charging small ammounts for running sessions.
Next meeting
Monday 12th December, 6.30pm, Steve's house.
